No other motor has attracted more attention than the Shimano STEPS E8000 – and rightly so!
It’s not its power making it this popular, but the overall package.
Straight away you’ll love the intuitive usage, great readability, and
the superbly positioned display. Shimano has long relied on electronic
drivetrains (Di2), which are obviously fully compatible with the motor.
The combination of an electronic motor with an electronic groupset from a
single manufacturer makes total sense, but still needs some
improvement. In the basic configuration we tend to ride the Shimano
motor mainly in its Trail mode, which offers a very progressive power
With gentle pedal strokes the motor gives little support, and vice versa. The Eco mode is rather weak and comes in handy mainly when trying to save battery power. The Boost mode, however, is incredibly powerful and causes the drive wheel to spin on steep or loose terrain from time to time. All modes can be individually adjusted via the E-TUBE app. You will clearly notice the motor kicking in and turning off, especially when approaching the 25 km/h limit, but he motor supports you nicely whatever the cadence is.

It decouples at speeds above 25 km/h and a slight internal drag is noticeable. Two more elements distinguish the Shimano STEPS motor: its light weight and compact build give manufacturers and designers a lot of freedom with frame designs and integration-related issues.A number of brands (i.e. FOCUS and BULLS) use their own battery solutions.
